Build light in layers

A successful room rarely relies on one fitting. Combine ambient, task and accent light so the room works throughout the day.

Ambient light

This is the room's general glow. Pendants, chandeliers, wall lights and floor lamps can all contribute.

Task light

Use focused light where you read, prepare food, work or get ready. Check beam direction, height and glare.

Accent light

Use a smaller pool of light to draw attention to texture, art or an architectural feature.

What to check before ordering

• Bulb or integrated light source.
• Wattage, voltage and light colour.
• Dimming compatibility.
• Indoor or outdoor suitability and IP rating.

Installation

Use a qualified electrician for fixed electrical lighting. Confirm the wall or ceiling can support the fitting and supplied fixings are suitable for the surface.

Choosing light colour

Warm light creates a softer evening atmosphere. Neutral light is clearer for mixed use. Cooler light feels brighter and is often better suited to task-focused spaces.
